How the fuel cost calculator works
Enter where you're starting, any stops along the way, and your destination. We find the fastest driving route using OpenStreetMap data and measure every leg in miles. Then we look up what fuel actually costs near your starting point: in the UK from the government's Fuel Finder scheme, which every forecourt must report to, and in the US from the Energy Information Administration's weekly survey.
The cost is simply the miles you'll drive, divided by your car's miles per gallon, multiplied by the price of the fuel. Add the number of people travelling to see each person's share.
The formula
UK: cost = miles ÷ mpg × 4.546 × price per litre. A UK gallon is 4.546 litres.
US: cost = miles ÷ mpg × price per gallon.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Divide the distance by your car's miles per gallon to get the gallons you'll use, then multiply by the fuel price. In the UK, pumps sell in litres, so multiply the gallons by 4.546 first. The calculator above does this for every leg of your route.
Can I add more than one stop?
Yes. Add up to ten stops and tick Return to start for a round trip. You'll see the cost of each leg as well as the total.
Where do the fuel prices come from?
UK prices come from the government's Fuel Finder scheme and are refreshed every 30 minutes. US prices come from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly retail survey. You can always type in the price on your local pump instead.
Does it work for diesel?
Yes. Choose Diesel and we'll use local diesel prices. Diesel cars usually get more miles per gallon, which often offsets the higher pump price.
